We are now in the first month Canada 150, and my team and I are very excited to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation throughout 2017! Our government is collaborating on festivities to mark this enormous milestone with regional governments, organizations and communities from coast-to-coast-to-coast. We have an opportunity this year to come together and celebrate our shared values, our achievements as a nation, our place in the world, and this beautiful land that we are lucky to call home.
The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, has reminded us that for Canada 150, “let’s be proud of our diversity; let’s reinforce the relationships that hold us together; and let’s highlight the richness of our common history and our heritage.” To do so, we are focused on four major themes: diversity and inclusiveness, the environment, young people, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. Our vision is to highlight those qualities that bring people together and inspire them to embrace that which makes Canada great.
Throughout 2016 my colleagues and I worked hard to bring Canada 150 community funding initiatives to all parts of the country so that we can celebrate our collective history both at a national and a local level. Now, as we move through the first month of 2017, I encourage all of you to learn more about what you can do in your community to contribute to the amazing Canada 150 experiences taking place from coast to coast to coast. On December 31st, we kicked off the year with memorable activities in 19 urban centres across Canada. Be a part of this historic Canadian milestone as we continue to grow together and build an even better Canada! Check out the Canada 150 website to learn more. Happy Canada 150!
